Realm of the Mad God

Realm of the Mad God

I just completed my first week of “Realm of the Mad God.”

This game is the love child of Galaga and World of Warcraft. The developer, Wild Shadow Studios, uses old school 8-bit graphics and the class/raid system that Blizzard loves so much to create a very fun and addicting MMO.

The player starts the game playing only a Wizard. This, until the player hits a certain level, is the only unlocked class in the game. As you progress through the ranks to the 20 level cap, you start to unlock several of the 15’ish classes in the game. Any World of Warcraft veteran will start to recognize the classic classes like: Archer, Wizard, Priest, Rogue and Warrior with a few new and unheard of classes tossed in the mix.

The goal of this game is to hit 20, kill the bosses of the realm (aka. “Gods”) and loot their digital corpses for gear and stat potions to become the deadliest mofo on your server. Though players may discard this game as a low-budget wannabe WOW or EverQuest, there is one very particular twist: If you die, your character is deleted.

That’s right. If your twinked-out god-killing beast of blurry pixels is killed, they are NEVER COMING BACK! This, in its own twisted right, is central to the game’s appeal and addictiveness. When your character is deleted, he or she is granted “fame” for what they accomplished in their life. Killing bosses, getting gear, completing quests and participating in realm events will all give bonus fame to the character. When you die, if you have accumulated enough fame, (i.e live a really long time without dieing) you will find a place on the leader boards along with the other top 19 players for the week, month or of all time.

Dieing in this game makes every player, including myself, frantically smash their hands into the keyboard looking for their “recall home button,” scream at their keyboard for not reading their minds and porting them home when a band of Gods come running at them, stare at the computer screen dumbly wondering if they’re dreaming or not and then, after accepting momentary defeat, create another character and do it all over again.
