Sony E3 2013 Press Conference Run-Down
Sony was the last press conference on the first day of E3. And they may have already stolen the show. Sony came out a little slow promoting its PS Vita and showing off already released titles but things then began to pick up rapidly. The big take away is that the PS4 finally has a price point……$399. One hundred dollars less than the rival Xbox One. It has also been confirmed that the PS4 will have a 500GB hard drive.
The PS4 design was met with a great reception by the crowd. It looks to be smaller than the Xbox One and instead of a standard box shape it’s a little longer in the back and resembles more of a rhombus. In terms of sleekness and placing in you entertainment center however, it looks like the PS4 will fit in nicely.
Sony made a point to get the big issue out of the way. There will be no DRM protection against used games on the Playstation 4. No questions asked, any PS4 game placed in a different console will not have restrictions placed on it by Sony.
One of the flagship titles announced during the press conference was Final Fantasy XV which was formally titled Final Fantasy Versus XIII. Square Enix also revealed the trailer for their next title Kingdom Hearts III. Both Square Enix titles are PS4 exclusives and will be available in 2014.
The show stopper however was Bungie’s “Destiny”. Gameplay footage was shown for the first time running on PS4 hardware and despite a few technical hiccups it proved to be the best trailer of the show. “The Order: 1886” was a surprise new IP for the Playstation 4 and will be a title to watch out for throughout the rest of E3.
Sony also announced that all current Playstation Plus subscriptions will continue on the Playstation 4 and free games will continue to be offered through the service. The first free title to be launched with the PS4 will be the racer Drive Club for PS Plus subscribers. It was not made clear in the conference if Playstation Plus will be required for online multiplayer but surely this issue will be cleared up in the coming days.
The streaming cloud service Gaikai was also mentioned in the conference and for the most part was a rehash of what was previously stated in February during the PS4’s initial unveiling.
