Call of Duty: Ghosts Multiplayer Revealed
Infinity Ward has revealed new information on the multiplayer mode for Call of Duty: Ghosts today at a press event in Los Angeles. Call of Duty Elite integration, smartphone apps, and deeper player customizations are just the tip of the iceberg on what Call of Duty: Ghosts will offer this fall when it releases for PS3, XBOX 360, PS4, and Xbox One.
This year players will not only be able to customize their class loadout and the look of their weapons but their actual soldier themselves. Head, body type, helmet, and the actual equipment the avatar will wear can be chosen by the player. It will even include an option to make a female character which has its own set of equipment and styles. Infinity Ward claims there will be over 20,000 different combinations to choose from so in theory there should be enough content for everyone to find their own niche.
Over 20 new kill streaks have been added this year along with a new perk management system that forces the player to make tough choices on what type of strengths their character will have going into battle. Each perk will have a level from 1-5 and each player is only given 8 points to distribute between all the perks they want. For example someone can choose two perks with one of them being level five and the other level three. Another option would be to have eight perks and all of them be level one. The ability to mix and match the perks will definitely help for specific maps and game types.
New animations for leaning from behind cover, mantling over obstacles, and transitioning from sprint to crouch to prone have been added as well which Infinity Ward states makes the game feel more fluid and realistic in the heat of a firefight.
Dynamic map-changing events are being included for the first time this year in multiplayer similar to Battlefield 3. These events can be caused from player activated killstreaks or simply a trap placed by the other team in a key map location. From the Call of Duty: Ghosts website this year’s game is supposedly “the biggest overhaul of multiplayer since the original Modern Warfare”.
Squads and Clans
Squads and clans are being pushed to a more prominent role with the new Clan Wars feature that is available for Call of Duty Elite members. Clan Wars is 24/7 game mode where players can bring together their friends to try and take over an online map with specific events for each section. Playing in a particular section repeatedly will move you to the top of the leader board and grant bonus XP and perks for the members of the Clan.
The current activity of the Clan Wars will also be accessible from the Call of Duty app so you’re always in the know on what’s going on and if you’ve been knocked from the top spot.
Call of Duty: Ghosts is taking the same formula that has made it one of the most popular franchises in the world and throwing in a ton of new content. While the core game mechanics for multiplayer haven’t changed since day one it appears the people in the Infinity Ward think tank still find ways to keep things fresh. Undoubtedly the game will sell well worldwide, but we’ll soon see if it can even come close to the landmark game that was the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.
